Whether you are roughing it in a tent or planning a family outing to a national forest, there are many ways to make sure your experience is fun and safe. Consider the following safety tips.

Pack the "Essentials" and be prepared for minor injuries, sudden weather changes or delays. The following are items you should include in your pack:

  1. Candles
  2. Clothing (always bring something warm, extra socks, and rain gear)
  3. Compass
  4. First Aid Kit
  5. Food: high energy food. Bring extra
  6. Foil (to use as a cup or signalling device)
  7. Flash-light
  8. Insect Repellent
  9. Map
  10. Nylon filament
  11. Hat
  12. Pocket mirror (to use as a signalling device)
  13. Prescription Glasses. (bring an extra pair)
  14. Prescription medications for ongoing medical conditions
  15. Radio with batteries
  16. Space blanket or a piece of plastic (to use for warmth or shelter)
  17. Sunscreen
  18. Sunglasses
  19. Trash bag (makes an adequate poncho)
  20. Water
  21. Waterproof matches or matches in a waterproof tin
  22. Whistle (to scare off animals or to use as a signalling device)
  23. Water Purification Tablets
  24. Pocket Knife

It is fun to go camping. But do take precautions to be safe. Disasters have happened and lives lost, many that could have been prevented by proper planning.
